Poland, a country with exceptionally rich and diverse environment, more and more often is seen as a country with very polluted, outright unbreathable air, a country on top positions of infamous “smog rankings”.
Hence, the question that needs to be asked is: what are the causes of poor air quality in Poland? The first one that comes to an average Pole's mind is the negative influence of industry and power industry based mainly on fossil fuels. Paradoxically, it is difficult to blame anyone for such a perception of the causes of smog and air pollution in general. Most of us do not really know the complexity of the processes of formation of dangerous compounds emitted to the atmosphere and do not know the main sources of formation of such substances.
Therefore, it is high time to start challenging certain myths and stereotypes with adequate information and education. The "Power Industry for Air Quality" project and this report, which identifies the real sources of smog-causing pollution and presents the initiatives of the energy sector to prevent and reduce this health-threatening phenomenon, serve this purpose.
For several years, the energy sector in Poland has been undergoing transformation related to environmental and climate protection as well as care for human health. Polish energy groups have undertaken and continue numerous initiatives aimed at preventing and limiting the sector's adverse impact on the natural environment.
The Polish Electricity Association, being aware of the need to intensify informational and educational activities concerning the general smog problem, launches the "Power Industry for Air Quality" project. Its aim is to change attitudes of the society, to develop appropriate civic attitudes and to raise energy and ecological awareness of the Poles.
This report and its presentation mark the beginning of the "Power for Air Quality" project. The project involves both information activities and cooperation with the mass media, as well as educational activities addressed directly to the general public of everyday electricity users.
